KPD Blotter: Wood Carver Arrested After Crashing Closed Meeting at City Hall

Other reports include the mysterious case of an overturned canoe found floating off Marsh Park and a $3,500 aluminum theft.

The following are selected reports from the Kirkland Police Department for the period of Jan. 23-26.

Jan. 23

  • About 55 oxycodone tablets were stolen from a 48-year-old woman who lives on NE 124th Place in Juanita, some time between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. The was no burglary reported and the woman did not seek prosecution. Oxycodone is a widely abused synthetic opiate, a prescription painkiller.
  • About $3,500 worth of aluminum commercial window framing was stolen from a glass business on 120th Avenue NE in the Totem Lake area during the weekend of Jan. 21-22. The theft was reported by a 52-year-old man, and police have no leads.


Jan. 24

  • A burglar broke in through a sliding glass window of a residence in the 700 block of 3rd Street just north of downtown -- three blocks from City Hall and the Police Station -- and stole three laptop computers and jewelry from the 27-year-old female resident. It happened between 7:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The victim could not provide serial numbers and there were no suspects.
  • After creating a disturbance at a casino on NE 144th in Kingsgate, yelling at employees and at first refusing to leave, a 46-year-old Kirkland woman was arrested while driving in the parking lot. She refused to submit to a breath alcohol test, and was taken away on charges of driving under the influence, resisting arrest and obstruction. It happened just before 1 a.m.

  • Police arrested a 40-year-old Kirkland man who showed up at a closed meeting at City Hall on 5th Avenue, sat down and began carving a wooden statue with a paring knife. He wouldn’t identify himself and said only that he was a lecturer and would be giving a presentation. He also had with him a framed newspaper article about the shooting by a Seattle police officer of Native American carver John T. Williams. Police arrested him for disorderly conduct when they came to remove him and he became uncooperative. It happened between 4:45 p.m. and 5 p.m.
  • Police, fire and and King County Marine Patrol units responded to a report of an overturned canoe off Marsh Park at 6700 Lake Washington Boulevard at about 9 a.m. The 53-year-old woman who reported this to police also said there was a wet dog digging at the park dock. The canoe was found to have been in the water for some time and was pulled ashore and taken to the police property room. The dog had escaped from a house nearby and was not related to the canoe at all.


Jan. 26

  • A 55-year-old woman who lives on NE 143rd Place in north Juanita reported that on Nov. 1, someone somehow rang up a $380 charge on her debit card in Port St. Lucia, Fla. She never lost her card and had been in possession of it the whole time. The case was listed as a fraud and identity theft incident.
