Nightly Closures This Week on NE 116th Near I-405

One lane will be shut down west of the freeway from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. all week until Friday morning. The work is part of a major improvement project to the 116th/I-405 interchange in the south Totem Lake area.

Nighttime closures of one lane on busy Northeast 116th Street near its intersection with Interstate 405 have begun and will continue through Friday morning, state highway officials are advising drivers.

The nightly closures, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. through June 10, will be just west of 120th Avenue Northeast, near the border of the Juanita and Totem Lake neighborhoods in Kirkland.

Part of a $17-million reconstruction of the NE 116th/I-405 interchange designed to reduce rush-hour bottlenecks, the closures are necessary for crews to do soil work. Flaggers and King County police will direct traffic during the closures.

The reconstruction project is expected to be finished by December 2012 and will add lanes to the I-405 on-ramp and off-ramp, as well adding as approach, exit and turn lanes lanes to Northeast 116th.

The interchange has been congested for years during the morning and afternoon commute hours. The project will increase capacity to and from I-405, and add bicycle lanes, sidewalks and improved lighting. Please see the attached PDF file for details.
