Elections Roundup: Two City Council Races Will Be On Primary Ballot

Candidate for position 2 Chuck Hinson has unofficially withdrawn, but not in time to remove his name from the ballot for the Aug. 16 primary.

Two three-way Kirkland City Council races will be on the primary election ballot on Aug. 16, despite the fact that one candidate has unofficially withdrawn, effectively making one contest a two-person race.

Chuck Hinson of the Norkirk neighborhood had filed with the King County Elections agency for incumbent Bob Sternoff's position 2 seat, but shortly thereafter changed his mind. He decided his busy life would not allow him to devote enough time to the job.

However, he said Thursday that he could not file documents with the agency to formally withdraw his name by the legally mandated June 16 deadline because heΒ was away on vacation.

"He did contact us (later) and we explained the withdrawal date is firm," said Kim Van Ekstrom, King County Elections spokeswoman. "But he could choose not to submit a statement for the voter's pamphlet."

Hinson's name will thus remain on the ballot, triggering a primary race to determine the two candidates who will run in the Nov. 8 general election. The third position 2 candidate is Jason Gardner, a resident of the Kingstate area.
