Juanita High P.E. Teacher Rescued in White Pass Backcountry

Kristian Dahl and his uncle were spotted by rescuers Sunday morning after spending a cold night in the wilderness.

teacher Kristian Dahl was rescued Sunday in the wilderness of Yakima County after getting lost Saturday while skiing the newly accessible backcountry of White Pass ski area.

KING/5-TV reported that the King County Sheriff's Guardian One helicopter spotted Dahl and his uncle in the morning after they spent the night in the wilderness. Β Dahl, a coach and physical education teacher, was skiing White Pass Saturday with family members when he and his uncle went into the backcountry and got lost.

They were outside for about 20 hours before being rescued Sunday, bruised, tired and cold, but otherwise fine. They had set up a rough camp Saturday evening and managed to get a warming fire built.

White Pass ski area opened a new lift and an expanded in-bounds area this season that is providing greater access to the surrounding backcountry.
