Bright and Shiny New Things: KAC Exhibition Opening and Summer Catalogue

At the Kirkland Arts Center, summer has arrived!

As May gives way to June, the Kirkland Arts Center is looking toward the summer. Not only is there a new exhibition opening this Friday, we also have our KAC summer class catalogue available in print and online.

So, first, I just have to say goodbye to The Three-Dimensional Line. The exhibition has been my constant companion for the last six weeks. I wrote about Michael Ottersen’s glitter piece a few weeks back and I just couldn’t resist giving a final farewell to the thought-provoking exhibition. Peter Frank, a California-based writer for the Huffington Post also had a few parting words (all good!) to say about the exhibition. I am sorry to say goodbye, yet excited to say hello to Social Security.

This Friday, June 3, 2011 from 6-8:30pm Social Security opens in the Kirkland Arts Center Gallery. The exhibition showcases work by eleven artists, all of whom are inspired by current events, politics, American icons, and social concerns. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects will be on display, including Deborah F. Lawrence’s  retelling of the Preamble to the Constitution in the form of collaged maps and recycled materials, Charles Krafft’s slip cast, hand painted objects that look like porcelain upon first glance, are, in reality, subtle commentaries on politically potent objects, and The Game of LIFE installation, which features three new versions of the iconic game. Stop by on Friday for a free first look and some tasty food!

And last, but not least, the Kirkland Arts Center’s summer catalogue is now available. There are a myriad of offerings for students of all ages. KAC offers a number of workshops, including Block Printing, Watercolor on Location, and Introduction to Oil Painting, in addition to ceramics classes that range from Beginning Throwing to Advanced Wheel. There are drawing and painting classes to suit every need, printmaking sessions, youth and teen classes and workshops, as well as summer art camps for children ages 5 to 11. Before I sign off on this post, I just have to mention the new summer series being offered at KAC this summer, Art History 101. I will be teaching these classes in the KAC gallery, with different topic headings every week. The series starts off with Italian Masters, followed by Impressionism, American Icons, Stealing Rembrandt, and Is That Art? We will cap off the series the first week of August with Museum Mysteries. Whatever your interests, KAC has a class for you!

I can’t wait for summer in Kirkland.
